Mysore City Corporation approves bulk water supply facility

MYSORE: The new bulk water supply facility planned near the Krishnarajsagar dam, which got the stamp of approval from the MCC on Wednesday, has factored in the water requirement of the Tier-II city for over seven decades. The urbanization owing to improved connectivity between Mysore and Bangalore has been taken into account when the project was prepared. 

The proposed plant can supply water using gravitational force cutting the dependence on electricity and will be networked with other two water supply schemes to ensure that drinking water is available to all parts of the city even if one of them fails for some reason. 

The Rs 327.50 crore project, which will get water upstream of KRS dam, will lead to closing of century-old Belagola pumping unit which is built by Mysore maharani Vani Vilas.

During the discussion on the proposed project, the Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) executive engineer K P Jayaram told the members that they plan to build the new facility at Hale Undavadi, two kms upstream of the dam, by 2016. As per the estimate, Mysore requires 2 tmcft water from the KRS dam by 2016 and 4 tmcft by 2046. It will jump to 8.11 tmcft by 2061, he stated.

The projected population by 2016 is 16.22 lakh and 25.50 lakh by 2031 and 37.81 lakh by 2046. The water requirement, which is 273 million liters per day (MLD) now, will jump to 310 MLD in 2016, 456 MLD in 2031 and 670 MLD in 2046. The present water pumping units cannot attend to the growing need, the official stated.

Luckily, the KIWS&DB has located seven acres of government land at Hale Undavadi where it is proposing to build the jackwell and pumping unit. The land is required for expansion. The plan is to design the jackwell to draw water to meet the projected requirement of 2076. However, the pipeline will be initially designed for 30 years. The proposed facility can draw water even when the water level reaches dead storage given that there will be 4 tmcft left in the reservoir
